Junior Mints Copycat Recipe

My absolute favorite watching snack in popcorn and Junior Mints. I recommend trying it, if you never have. Sadly though, Junior Mints are not vegan.

If you at the ingredients on Junior Mints, you might say “Great! these are vegan”, but according to, they are not.

This comment, left by Issaac Jedicka, made me question, again, if Junior Mints are considered vegan or not.img_7308

This led me to look at the website I trust the most when I am unsure about something like this, PETA. PETA does not list Junior Mints on their vegan candy list, so I am going with Junior Mints are NOT vegan friendly.

Now, since I love Junior Mints and popcorn so much, I decided to turn to Pinterest to find a recipe. I chose to go with this recipe. It seemed simple enough and was only needed 4 ingredients that I happened to already have.

First, you slowly add peppermint extract and a milk-alternative to powdered sugar. I, personally, used Silk Vanilla Protein NutMilk because that’s what I had in the fridge.

After, putting the mint center in the fridge for maybe 30 minutes, at the most, I dipped them in melted chocolate. I had to mix two different bags, since the first one was already partly used. (FUN FACT: you don’t have to buy the more expensive “Vegan” marketed chocolate chips because most bitter-sweet chips do not contain milk.) I tapped off the excess chocolate on top of a spoon and had a little bit of trouble transferring the candy to the tray because they stuck to the fork. This might be because I didn’t freeze them for an hour, like the instructions said. I do want to make them prettier, before I take them to a party or anything. img_7298

Pros:  I think these tastes exactly like regular Junior Mints. I may be biased though, since I haven’t had Junior Mints in quite some time. I need to have a non-vegan taste test them to be sure.

Cons: The center doesn’t melt in popcorn or your mouth quite as well as regular Junior Mints do. On the other hand, the outside melts much easier, as you can see in my picture below.

All in all, I really enjoyed these and will definitely be making them again.
